A local landmark known as the “Grand Dame of Carmel” and our destination stay during a drive down the coast of California. If you are looking for a romantic stay, as I always am, then look no further as in Carmel, love whirls in the salty air. The property is a lovely preserved mansion built in the early 1900’s by artist Christian Jorgensen for his beloved wife Angela (heir to the Ghiradelli dynasty). One need not imagine his inspiration, only open the windows to the lovely ocean views and salty air to know exactly why he chose this location.
The staff was warm and welcomed us with a glass of local wine and a board of assorted cheeses. While they carried our suitcases up the hotel stairs, we nestled into the oversized sofas and began our celebration. A perfect welcome after a stunning drive down the California coast.
Sounds of the Pacific Ocean complement the property’s well-loved gardens. The rooms are small but great for cuddling, and the decor was white, crisp and relaxing. Our room provided a lovely view of the ocean.
The hotel is located in downtown Carmel, a charming small town that boasts unique one of a kind shops lining the streets and specializing in what Carmel does best, “artsy”. Art, crafts, fashion, and food make for a very pleasant way to while away the afternoon. And there I stood, in a charming market store ordering a colourful homemade vegetable stew and crusty rustic bread thinking what a delightful discovery we had just made. The spring garden and basil aroma made my mouth water. We made our way down to the beach for a late afternoon treat. We strolled the beach and still had time to relax by the pool. The hotel made several dinner suggestions and provided a transfer service to the restaurant. I appreciated the drive as the restaurant was uphill, but most importantly it allowed me to put on some cute heels.
The next morning we were greeted to a delicious complimentary champagne breakfast. We had eggs with a side of prosciutto and potatoes, along with fresh fruit and buttery pastries. We took our breakfast out to the garden and had a mimosa toast to our lovely stay at La Playa Carmel.
